Eleuthera is known for its beaches, its settlements, its people—and its potcakes.
If you spend even a short time on the island, you will likely meet one. Curled up in the shade. Walking alongside a fisherman. Waiting patiently near a dock or trotting down the road with curious eyes and a hopeful tail wag. They are part of island life and they deserve our care.
A “potcake” is the affectionate Bahamian name for mixed-breed island dogs.
The name comes from the leftover cooked rice and peas that would stick to the bottom of the pot—the “pot cake.” Traditionally, families would scrape these leftovers out and feed them to their dogs. Over time, the name stuck.
Potcakes are not a specific breed. They are a blend of many breeds, shaped by generations of island life. They are resilient, intelligent, loyal, and deeply connected to their surroundings. Every potcake is unique—just like the island itself.

On small islands, resources can be limited. Veterinary access may require travel. Spay and neuter programs are ongoing but need support. Some dogs are abandoned. Some are born into difficult circumstances but potcakes are strong survivors. With a little food, clean water, medical care, and patience, they thrive.
Many visitors who adopt potcakes describe them as the most loyal companions they’ve ever known.
Treat island dogs with patience and respect. Not every dog is aggressive—many are simply cautious.
If feeding a stray, provide fresh water and appropriate dog food when possible, rather than scraps that may harm their health.
When spay/neuter clinics and rescue programs operate, share their information and support their work.
If you fall in love with a potcake during your visit, explore safe and responsible adoption channels rather than informal arrangements.
Teach children and visitors how to approach unfamiliar dogs gently and respectfully.

Caring for potcakes is not one person’s responsibility. It is something we do together—residents, visitors, rescue organizations, and animal advocates. Eleuthera is a place built on community. And community includes compassion for animals.

For now, we start with awareness—and kindness. Potcakes may not have a pedigree. They may not have papers. But they have loyalty, resilience, and spirit. And that makes them part of Eleuthera’s story.
