Protect Eleuthera

Find out more

Respecting Marine Life on Eleuthera’s Shores

The beaches of Eleuthera are more than just beautiful — they are alive.

Every shoreline tells a story. Every shell, every creature, every movement of the tide plays a role in a delicate and natural balance.

As we explore and enjoy these beaches, we also share a responsibility to protect them.

A Place of Discovery

Walking along the beaches of Eleuthera is an experience like no other.

You may come across:

  • Starfish resting in the sand
  • Conch moving slowly along the shoreline
  • Crabs searching for shelter
  • Small fish or sea life left behind by the tide

These moments are special—but they are not meant to be disturbed.

If You Don’t Know, Don’t Touch

Not everything on the beach is safe to handle.

Some marine life:

  • Can sting or bite
  • May be fragile and easily harmed
  • May not survive being picked up or moved

Even something that looks harmless can cause injury or stress to the animal.

If you are unsure:

  • Do not touch
  • Do not pick up
  • Observe from a distance

When in doubt, leave it alone.

When the Tide Goes Out

Low tide often leaves marine life temporarily stranded.

Some may appear still or lifeless—but many are simply waiting for the water to return.

While it may feel helpful to intervene:

  • Not all animals should be moved
  • Moving them incorrectly can cause harm

If you believe something needs help:

  • Ask someone with experience
  • Seek guidance before acting

Helping—The Right Way

There are times when helping is appropriate—but it must be done carefully.

  • Some animals can be gently returned to the water
  • Others should remain where they are
  • Proper handling matters

If you don’t know what to do, the safest choice is to leave the animal and get help.

Shells Are Homes, Not Souvenirs

Shells are an important part of life on the beach.

  • Hermit crabs rely on shells for protection
  • As they grow, they must find larger shells
  • Without available shells, they turn to trash like bottle caps

Removing shells—even empty ones—disrupts this natural cycle.

Please leave shells of all sizes behind.

What Doesn’t Belong on the Beach

Unfortunately, not everything found on the beach comes from nature.

You may see:

  • Rope
  • Plastic
  • Fishing line
  • Hooks
  • Bottles and debris

These items:

  • Harm marine life
  • Pollute the ocean
  • Can cause injuries to people and animals

If you can safely collect and dispose of them, it helps protect the island.

Simple Ways to Protect Eleuthera’s Shores

✔ Take photos instead of collecting
✔ Leave marine life undisturbed
✔ Leave shells where you find them
✔ Pick up trash when you can
✔ Teach children to respect nature
✔ Stay aware of your surroundings.

A Shared Responsibility

Eleuthera’s beaches remain special because they are still natural, still wild, and still full of life.

Protecting them doesn’t require big actions—just mindful ones.

Respect what you find.

Leave what belongs.

Protect what cannot protect itself.

Stay Informed

From time to time, certain marine conditions may require extra caution—such as the presence of Portuguese Man O’ War along the shoreline.
